Jewelry dates back as far as 5000 BC, with many stories of Legends and Lores involved. I include many of them in The Meaning of Gem and Stones. Read more about them here.
My wonderful husband Myles who is my great supporter in life, was recently reading this very interesting book, titled “The Story of the Irish Race” by Mac Manus.
He came across this interesting fact that shows how Jewelry was then and still is so very important to people.
In ancient Ireland, great fairs were held occasionally and much like today’s gatherings, music, games, sports and markets provided much needed relaxation and enjoyment.
At these fairs the people enjoyed poetry, learned their laws, their rights, and were instructed on the past history of their country and the deeds of the great ones gone before.
These fairs were regarded as of such overwhelming national importance, that special and exceptional laws were instituted to insure that they were properly carried out.
The King’s peace was proclaimed for all.
During the fairs continuance, all fugitives walked free men amongst free men. Any man, royal or simple, who broke the Kings peace was to be punished with death.
On the eve of the Fair, all personal ornaments, such as rings, bracelets, necklaces or other jewelry that had been pawned to relieve financial distress, was to be returned to their owners.
Any pawnbroker or creditor that refused to returned these jewels were heavily fined for the suffering of those forced to appear without adornment at these great festive gatherings.
The Nation was to appear it’s richest, most beautiful and best.
Back then in those ancient times a Celebration was just cause to look your best no different than today.
