I bet your thinking this lady is crazy!!
Since I began my career selling Jewelry I became very intrigued about the Meaning of Gemstones. As I delved further I also found many of these Gemstone had stories of Legends and Lore, which have been read and recorded in books for centuries.
As I was gathering information about this Months Birthstone, Sapphire, I came across this interesting tidbit.
Abbes Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) chronicled the healing powers of gemstones in her book, Physica. According to her view, gemstones are formed through the powerful combination of water and fire; therefore they hold powers corresponding to these natural phenomena.
She also believed that each stone had a certain, divine blessing from God.
She said the following about Sapphire:
“Who is dull and would like to be clever, should, in a sober state, frequently lick with the tongue on a Sapphire, because the gemstone’s warmth and power, combined with the saliva’s moisture, will expel the harmful juices that affect the intellect. Thus, the man will attain a good intellect.”
Abbes Hildegard von Bingen truly believed back in her days that licking a Sapphire would bring about those powers. Nowadays some believe that making a smoothie with a Gem elixir will give you energy throughout the day.
We read and hear that Amber is known as the “goodluck” Stone, transmuting energy of the earth. And that healers use Chiastolite to lessen fevers, rheumatism, balance the immune system, fortify nerves, and increase lactation in nursing mothers.
Then there’s the Legends. One of my favorites come from Greek myth. It’s all about Gods, tigers, maidens and Amethyst. It’s an intriguing story to say the least, one I wrote about in The Meaning of Amethyst. I think you’ll enjoy it.
It is truly what you believe. Whether you wear Gems because you love them or whether you go further and enjoy them for their possible health benefits or for the good they may bring to your life.
You be the judge on this. For me I showcase and sell beautiful Gemstone Jewelry because I love them. I do enjoy sharing these stories, and I have to be honest, when I hear a certain Gemstone may help me in some way, well, I will wear that chosen piece for that reason.
