Legends, Lores and Meaning of Amethyst, February’s Birthstone

Celebrating Amethyst:

Amethyst is the Birthstone for February. It is also associated with the 4th, 6th, and 17th Wedding Anniversary. If you would like to see a full list of all Anniversary Gems please click here.

I am partial to this beautiful Gem as it is my Birthstone.  There is not a day that goes by that I am not wearing my Amethyst Ring.

What is Amethyst:

Amethyst one of the most precious and valuable stones belonging to the quartz group of minerals. Amethyst belongs to the macrocrystalline branch of Quartz and owes its violet/purple color to iron and aluminum impurities. If it wasn’t for these coloring agents, Amethyst would simply be a transparent, ordinary colorless quartz.  But with these agents, Amethyst displays all the violet hues from the palest lavender to the deepest purple.

Amethyst Healing Properties:

“The Stone of Spirituality” Amethyst is associated with:

  • stability
  • balance
  • peace
  • courage
  • sincerity
  • inner strength
  • calm disposition

It is believed that the wearer of this birthstone will be free of health problems such as headaches, arthritis and sleeplessness. Amethyst is known to heal circulatory system disorders, bring relief from pain and prevent all kinds of addictions in a person.

It’s often the best gem to calm and relax the nerves. The energy of Amethyst nourishes the nervous system and allows it to move into a more relaxed state. Amethyst can be useful when we are going through emotional extremes or when we feel easily thrown off balance emotionally.

Lore and Legend of Amethyst:

Since purple is considered a royal color, Amethyst  enjoyed an historical importance as an insignia of power. Fine Amethysts are featured in the British Crown Jewels and were also a favorite of Catherine the Great and Egyptian Royalty.

Amethyst was also a favorite stone in the high ranks of the Christian Church and was referred to as “the stone of bishops”.

The Greek word “amethystos” translates into “not drunken.” Amethyst was considered to be a strong antidote against drunkenness, which is why wine goblets were often carved from it.

The legend of the origin of Amethyst comes to us from Greek myth. Dionysius, the God of Intoxication, was angered one day by an insult from a human and swore revenge on the next mortal that crossed his path. Violent tigers should carry out his wish.

Amethyst, a beautiful young maiden on her way to pay tribute to the goddess Diana, was to become the victim. Diana turned Amethyst into a stature of pure crystalline Quartz to protect her from the brutal claws. Dionysus wept tears of wine in remorse for his action at the sight of the beautiful statue. The god’s tears stained the Quartz purple, creating the famous gem.
